Meet Mr. Turner, our fun and devoted District-wide Band Teacher who, alongside his partner in crime Mr. Hills, brings energy, creativity, and a touch of rock star flair to the band room!
🎤 What inspired you to become a music teacher?
I come from a family of music teachers, so I have been around bands and choirs my whole life. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my grandpa's high school bands in Augusta and helping my mom set up for her elementary music concerts in Derby.
🎤 How did you first get involved with music?
I started taking music lessons when I was 7 years old (piano and percussion). I played violin in orchestra in 4th grade, then moved to percussion for the band in 5th grade and haven't stopped since!
🎤 What’s your favorite instrument to play (or teach) and why?
My favorite instrument to play is the marimba. My favorite instrument to teach are the claves....my perc students know why.
🎤 What’s one memorable moment from your teaching career that stands out?
It's not a singular moment, but my favorite moment is that split second of silence between the end of an incredible performance and the start of the applause. That moment is pure bliss.
🎤 If you could perform with any musician or band (past or present), who would it be?
I think I'd look pretty good in blue, so I'd rock out with the Blue Man Group.
🎤 What’s one piece of advice you’d give to students interested in pursuing music?
Music is the product of pure emotion. Learn how to express your own emotions through the music that you create.
🎤 What’s your go-to song that always lifts your spirits?
Anything by the band MJ12. They are Awesome!
🎤 What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you as a musician?
I'm a rock star!
🎤 How do you think music education positively impacts students?
Music education fosters creativity and discipline as well as further developing students' cognitive and social skills.
🎤 What’s your favorite part about teaching music at Rose Hill Schools?
Teaching with my bestie Mr. Hills..... Oh, and the amazing students we have here in Rose Hill.

After what felt like a never-ending winter, our crews have been hard at work on the turf projects! Right now, they are laying gravel, a crucial step for drainage.
Reminder that this project includes a multi-use turf field for band, soccer, and PE, along with a separate on-campus softball field.
We’re still on track and hopeful that our seniors will get to enjoy these incredible new spaces!

Meet Ms. King, our incredible vocal music teacher at the Middle School! With a lifelong love for music and a heart full of inspiration, she’s been guiding and nurturing young musicians for years. From piano lessons as a child to performing with the bassoon in college, Ms. King’s dedication to music shines through in everything she does.
🎤 What inspired you to become a music teacher?
I had many good teachers that inspired me. At the top of the list is Mary Chandler my middle school choir teacher and private piano teacher, Ken Jones my HS choir teacher, and Carl Schminke my HS band teacher.
🎤 How did you first get involved with music?
Music has always been a part of my life. My Dad sang and played with me on his knee since I was a baby. I remember playing my Grandmas piano since about age 3. I FINALLY got piano lessons at age 9 and took them all through college.
🎤 What’s your favorite instrument to play (or teach) and why?
Piano and voice are my favorite instruments to play and teach
🎤 What’s one memorable moment from your teaching career that stands out?
In 2020 a senior who was up for homecoming said I was his most inspiring teacher. It meant the world to me to think he still thought of me so kindly even years after I was his teacher.
🎤 If you could perform with any musician or band (past or present), who would it be?
Freddy Mercury!
🎤 What’s one piece of advice you’d give to students interested in pursuing music?
PRACTICE!
🎤 What’s your go-to song that always lifts your spirits?
Too many to name! Rumors album by Fleetwood Mac for sure!
🎤 What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you as a musician?
I played the bassoon from 8th grade through college and received a scholarship for it at Friends University.
🎤 How do you think music education positively impacts students?
We connect with students in such a unique way. Singing is a very vulnerable and intimate way to commune. Having students for multiple years is another way. We become family.
🎤 What’s your favorite part about teaching music at Rose Hill Schools?
The kids! We have the nicest, kindest, funniest, kids! I love them all and watching them grow as people and musicians is one of my greatest blessings!

Meet Mr. Hills, one of our dedicated and talented district band teachers! With a passion for music and a commitment to his students, he helps bring the sound of Rose Hill to life.
🎤 What inspired you to become a music teacher?
I've always had an affinity for music. It seemed to be the most natural thing to do.
🎤 How did you first get involved with music?
My family sang quite a bit when I was little.
🎤 What’s your favorite instrument to play (or teach) and why?
Cowbell. We always need more.
🎤 What’s one memorable moment from your teaching career that stands out?
There are too many to count.
🎤 If you could perform with any musician or band (past or present), who would it be?
I have actually been fortunate enough to perform with many of my trumpet role models. Some highlights include performing with Maynard Ferguson, the Big Phat Band, and Wayne Bergeron.
🎤 What’s one piece of advice you’d give to students interested in pursuing music?
Seek out the best players on your instrument or voice type and learn as much as you can from those people. Make sure that you love music - because it's not about the money.
🎤 What’s your go-to song that always lifts your spirits?
Mostly Church songs and songs about Jesus. Heart Attack by Demo Lovato. Her belt tone is 👌. The last riff from Defying Gravity. Show tunes in general.
🎤 What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you as a musician?
I have performed all over the USA, France, Canada, and Cuba.
🎤 How do you think music education positively impacts students?
This medium helps students develop both cross-curricular and life skills. Reading, writing, counting, and history are major components of music education. In an ensemble students learn to listen, work as a team, engage in processes of musical development, and perform - all of which prepare them for real-world life experience.
🎤 What’s your favorite part about teaching music at Rose Hill Schools?
The kids are amazing and I get to sit next to Josh Turner every day! Also, shout out to Lindsay Ashurst, Marti King, Riley McKee, and Rob Roach! We've got a tremendous music faculty!

Meet Mr. McKee, our passionate and devoted Vocal Teacher at the High School!
🎤 What inspired you to become a music teacher?
My mother was a choir teacher for over 30 years, so I guess it runs in the family. I’ve always enjoyed singing and creating music, so I wanted a career where I could focus on that. I was involved in both band and choir throughout school, and they were always my favorite classes.
🎤 How did you first get involved with music?
I’ve been involved in music from a very young age, starting with singing vocal solos and playing the piano for 4-H competitions.
🎤 What’s your favorite instrument to play (or teach) and why?
I primarily teach choir, but I also play the trumpet and bass guitar. I can also plunk out a few notes on the piano when needed.
🎤 What’s one memorable moment from your teaching career that stands out?
My favorite moments are when everything clicks. This happened in Rocketaires this year when we were painstakingly working through the same few pages over and over again. When we finally took it up to tempo, one student exclaimed, "Wait, that was us!?" That realization was priceless. Also, getting invited to sing at KMEA my third year in was a huge bonus!
🎤 What’s one piece of advice you’d give to students interested in pursuing music?
Make sure it’s REALLY what you want to do. It’s more than just singing songs—you also have to study a lot of history and theory, which tend to be the make-or-break classes. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but it’s worth it if it’s your passion.
🎤 What’s your go-to song that always lifts your spirits?
I have a few, but I would get in trouble if I sang them out loud.
🎤 How do you think music education positively impacts students?
Music provides a holistic brain experience, helps students work toward a goal as part of a team, and develops self-discipline—the list goes on!
🎤 What’s your favorite part about teaching music at Rose Hill Schools?
I love how the kids support each other. The Rocketaires root for Chamber Choir, Chamber Choir roots for Glee etc.—it creates a strong sense of community. The rest of the music staff is also incredibly supportive, which makes teaching here even better.

Meet Mr. Roach, one of our dedicated music teachers at the Primary & Intermediate Schools!
🎤 How did you first get involved with music?
My first memory of music is looking at the hymnal in church as a 1st or 2nd grader and watching how the notes went up and down while listening to the music playing. It was amazing to me that I could follow the sound I was hearing on the page in front of me.
🎤 What’s your favorite instrument to play (or teach) and why?
The guiro. Look it up.
🎤 What’s one memorable moment from your teaching career that stands out?
Seeing students that I had in the elementary school continue on with music in the middle school and put on an absolutely fabulous production on Annie Jr. I couldn't help but be just a little proud of them.
🎤 If you could perform with any musician or band (past or present), who would it be?
I would never be able to keep up with him musically, but Billy Joel. One of the greatest American songwriters ever.
🎤 What’s one piece of advice you’d give to students interested in pursuing music?
Stay with it. If it's easy, push yourself to make it challenging. If you find it difficult, keep plugging away. It will be worth it.
🎤 What’s your go-to song that always lifts your spirits?
Three Little Birds by Bob Marley
🎤 How do you think music education positively impacts students?
Studies have proven that playing musical instruments on a regular basis leads to improved test scores. Also, singing in choir has been shown to make learning foreign languages easier.
🎤 What’s your favorite part about teaching music at Rose Hill Schools?
The support we as music teachers receive from our administration and board of education; however, more than that, the incredible music talent that already exists in our students.
